YPO is a public sector supply organisation owned by 13 local authorities that is run on the same basis as a company. It has a turnover of £500 million, 450 staff and 200,000 sq ft of warehousing at its Wakefield base, where it serves its national base of more than 35,000 customers delivering regularly all over the UK from the South West of England to the North of Scotland. My involvement with YPO began in January 2009 when I was asked to evaluate the strategic options for the business. I carried out a strategic review and was later appointed to as interim CEO to see through the subsequent business transformation. I handed over to a new Managing Director in July 2011 having steered the business through a period of unprecedented change which saw profits more than double, 70% productivity gains, sickness and absence cut by 50% plus an all new board, reinvigorated leadership team and completely restructured organisation.
